Hamzah Ahmed
Managing Director
FdEng, MIET
Hamzah Ahmed is the Managing Director and Founder of Denville Energy Consulting. He holds a degree in Power Systems Engineering and Power Systems Management and has over a decade of experience in the industry.
Hamzah brings deep technical and strategic expertise to the UK energy sector. He most recently served as Head of Innovation at Blake Clough Consulting and currently holds the position of Chairman of the IET Manchester Power Network. At Blake Clough, Hamzah was responsible for founding and creating the innovation arm of the business, as well the creation of new revenue streams. He was also heavily involved in policy work relating to Grid Code changes, queue reform and advising clients on the impact these changes could have on their portfolios.
His previous roles include Principal Consultant at TNEI and Senior Power Systems Engineer at Energy Systems Catapult, alongside nearly seven years at National Grid, where he held various positions across both the Electricity System Operator (ESO) and Transmission Owner (TO) functions.
Whilst at TNEI, Hamzah led the origination of several key innovation projects and acted as project manager on the SIF BLADE Alpha innovation project. He also developed transmission and distribution curtailment models and methodologies that clients regularly used to great effect.
At Energy Systems Catapult, Hamzah was a Technical Lead and Senior Consultant, delivering a range of engineering projects focused on long-duration energy storage and detailed route-to-market analyses for technologies in both Great Britain and international markets.
While at National Grid, he played a key role in system operation, outage planning, compliance and reinforcement studies, and network innovation. He led several high-profile projects including:
- Hinkley Point C network reconfiguration
- Greenlink Interconnector protection works
- National Grid’s voltage compliance strategies
- National Grid Transmission curtailment management strategy
- Other complex strategic and technical initiatives
Renowned for his innovative approach, Hamzah has successfully led multiple innovation consortiums and secured over £1.5 million in grant funding (including NIA, SIF, and UKRI projects). His work demonstrates a strong understanding of both consumer needs and network challenges in the transition to net zero.
Throughout his career, Hamzah has collaborated with a broad spectrum of stakeholders—renewable developers, local authorities, devolved governments, SMEs, start-ups, network operators, and data centre developers—bringing cross-sector insight and a results-driven mindset to every engagement.
Outside of work, Hamzah is passionate about motorsports and has personally built several project cars. He is a keen amateur circuit racer, regularly participating in track events. He also enjoys hiking and is committed to mentoring young professionals, helping the next generation find their way into the energy industry.
